sweet!

----------------------------------------
Dear M. R. C.:

Welcome to the Office of the President. We, at the Academic Council, look forward to a cordial, fruitful, and even exciting relationship with you as you assume your duties as the University’s new Provost and Senior Vice President.

At our March meeting, members of the Academic Council overwhelmingly expressed their support for a recommendation from the University Committee on Educational Policy (UCEP) to urge the Office of the President to take whatever steps necessary to align the calendars of the quarter-based campuses and the semester-based campuses. Aligned calendars would save the University significant resources, facilitate the best and most efficient use of fully funded summer sessions, off-campus programs, transfer and intercampus cooperation, and further the educational mission of the University.

They noted that it is inherently unfair that some of our undergraduate students are unable to take advantage of the rich diversity of programs that UC has to offer, including education abroad, UCDC and the new Sacramento program, because of the different beginning and ending dates for quarters and semesters. In addition, the misaligned calendars are the major barrier to the seamless transfer of credit among many of UC’s campuses and off-site academic programs.

The Academic Council, therefore, vigorously recommends that the Office of the President facilitate the alignment of campus calendars, quarter-to-quarter and semester-to-semester. One way to
accomplish this would be for the Office of the President to develop a prototype calendar each year that the campuses would be encouraged to adopt.

We appreciate your careful consideration of our recommendation.
